Long style "double" dresser with two rows of side-by-side dawers, from a French Provincial bedroom set of the 1940s to 60s era. Maker is unknown but the style seemed a little unusual.
the former owner had badly chipped up the legs/feet so much that it did not sit level and was not repairable that way, so I replaced them with bun legs about 15 to 20 years ago. Old refinishing project I never completed.
I saved this piece for many years in hopes of restoring it because I felt that the construction quality was Superior and the design had a classic understated Elegance, together with a solid wood craftmanship and the utility of having double drawers next to each other, but not as long as the giant triple dressers that are more common in that era. I also thought that it could mix well with either the FP style or the 20s/30s depression styles. Double dressers were never made in the 20s/30, as that form came later, so this seemed like a good compromise when a longer piece was needed for that kind of a bedroom set.
It had some pleasant hand-painted floral details also, and some carved details.
The old finish is a bit worn, with marks, chips, scratches, discolorations, especially around the sides and top, which also has some veneer chips. The top was painted over, so I'm not sure what it looks like underneath. The side panels are bubbled up and will need some attention to smooth down again.
Structurally the piece is in good condition, and all handles are present. The potential should be obvious.
