This sourdough starter is made from organic einkorn flour, great for those who are gluten sensitive! It can be used to make delicious, healthy bread and other baked goods. For those who are gluten sensitive, organic einkorn wheat can be a great alternative to modern wheat. Einkorn is an ancient grain that is much easier to digest, particularly when fermented through the sourdough process.
This starter is live and active, not dehydrated. After it arrives you can have a loaf of bread fresh out of your oven within a day or two. With a minimal amount of care you will never need to buy starter again.
You will receive:
- 50 grams of strong healthy starter shipped in an 8 ounce glass jar
- Detailed directions for your starter on how to feed it, store it, how to put it to sleep for up to two or three months if you take a break from baking, etc.
- My recipe for sourdough sandwich bread (the einkorn recipe I use most often for my family!)
This starter can be very low maintenance and I go over your options in the included directions such as keeping it in the fridge, versus on the counter. Using this method you will never need to waste your einkorn flour by discarding starter as is common with some methods. You can use this starter in any recipe that calls for sourdough starter, einkorn or otherwise.
I will feed your starter right before shipping. When it arrives it will likely be hungry again, so you will want to have einkorn flour on hand, either all-purpose or whole grain, to feed it and start your sourdough journey.
Your starter will ship via USPS Priority Mail (1-3 day shipping) to ensure you receive it quickly. I ship this as a thick starter with a higher proportion of einkorn flour so that it travels well (1:2:3 ratio of starter, water, flour). If the weather is warm and there is a chance your starter will be left in a hot mailbox you may want to consider my dehydrated einkorn starter listing as an alternative. Another option if the weather is warm is to sign up for USPS Informed Delivery and opt to receive tracking notifications so you can retrieve your starter from the mailbox as soon as it's delivered. Sourdough starters are very resilient and difficult to damage, but overheating them is one way to kill them!
The included recipe is in grams, so having an inexpensive kitchen scale on hand is helpful for getting consistent results as you learn sourdough baking.
