Ahimsa Silk, also known as peace silk, cruelty-free silk and non-violent silk, refers to any type of silk that is produced without harming or killing the silk worms.
The production of peace silk yarn also allows the metamorphosis of the silkworm to a butterfly and the trees where the silk worm grows are not treated with insecticides or generic sprays. They grow in the wild so to speak. This remarkable silk is spun into yarn in rural India by women. It is a sustainable product produced using ancient techniques keeping rural India's traditions alive.
In conventional cultivated silk like mulberry silk the cocoons are boiled with the larvae still inside, however if the cocoons are boiled after the larvae have left them the silk made is then called non-violent silk, wild silk, organic silk and Ahimsa Silk.
This fabric is made from 80% muga silk. It was originally silk only for royalty in India. It is a beautiful natural golden colour with a shimmering glossy texture. It is produced from the muga silk worm only in the state of Assam in India. It is naturally organic and untouched by chemicals.
The silkworms feed on the leaves of Som and Soalu plants. It is often compared to be as expensive to gold. Also known as a coveted item for wedding attire and traditional wear in India. It produces the most luxurious of shawls and wraps and can be knitted, woven and crocheted. I can't even describe how soft this yarn is. This peace silk is a very popular fibre amongst vegans as the silkworm is not boiled with the cocoonMuga silk, which is mainly produced by the Garo community of Assam, is obtained from semi-domesticated multivoltine silkworm, Antheraea Assamensis. These silkworms feed on the leaves of Som and Soalu plants and the silk produced from them is known for its glossy texture and durability.
Another 20% of the fabric is made from tussar silk. Tussar silk (also known as tussah, tassar, tasar, and kosa silk) is made from cocoons produced by wild silk moths. Cousin to the mulberry silk moth, the tussar silk moth creates a rougher, more “rustic” fiber. Its slight imperfections lend this silk a peculiar charm and beauty and fabric woven from it has a depth and texture reminiscent of wood grain.
80% muga 20% tussar peace silk have most of the characteristics of classic mulberry silk: It’s light, breathable, and pleasant to wear. It is a bit stiffer, with a crisper hand, so it’s not a good choice for fluid pieces.
It is perfect for light garments such as tunics, skirts, and dresses adding a rustic charm to them.
The fabric is slightly sheer, so you will want to use a lining underneath, or highlight its sheerness in creative layering. Tussar is also a beautiful fabric for light summer scarfs and is superb for home decor, where a set of tussar curtains can add an elegant touch to a rustic interior.
The colour is natural shade of the cocoons. It is yellowish-beighe with natural brownish patterns.

Gentle hand wash or silk programme machine wash is recommended. The best way is to just dip it in a cold bucket of water with a capful of gentle soap, let it sit for 30 mins, and then rinse it out in fresh water. Air dry and steam ironing gives it a perfect finish.
