STEP 1: Attach Hinges to Gate
1. Figure out which way you want the gate to swing open. Be sure you’re attaching the hinge so that you can open the gate entirely in the right direction. The hinge should close in the direction you want the gate to open.
2. Place hinges on gate and mark screw locations
3. Drill in pilot holes
4. Install and tighten screws
STEP 2: Attach Gate to Wall/Board
It’s easier if you have a second person to hold the gate up while you drill it in.
Stud Install
Installing into a stud is the most secure mounting option. So first you need to find said stud. There are relatively inexpensive stud finders/detectors on the market <$10 or see if your handy neighbor has one to borrow. Just waive the finder over the wall and it is like a vertical version of the metal detector at the beach. Align hinges with marks made on wall/wood and attach with screws.
Drywall Install
If you can't install into a stud, installing into dry-wall is your next best option. You will need to use a drywall anchor to help the screw grip and provide support for the frame. Try to only drill into the wall as far as the anchor is long because you don’t know what is behind the wall and you don’t want to drill into anything important. Drill at depth and then put in the anchor into the wall and hammer until it’s flush with the wall. Use your screwdriver/drill to screw in the screw.
Wood Install
If you are installing into wood (like a stairway banister, high baseboard or door framing) this is similar to installing into a stud.
STEP 3: Attach Latch/Bolt
