Japanese Maple 'Bloodgood' / Acer palmatum 'bloodgood' is one of the most popular beginner species for growing bonsai due to its vibrant purple leaves, elegant, smooth bark, flexible branches, rapid growth habit, and ease at responding to bonsai pruning. Maples can be used in any style of bonsai but due to their soft wood, any deadwood on them is generally temporary, which can create limitations as well as creative opportunities. As Japanese maple leaf and branch size can be easily controlled, they work as both large and small bonsai; Broom, forest plantings, and informal upright tend to be most popular with this species.
These seeds were sourced from a landscape tree at the Franklin Park Conservatory's public park in Columbus, Ohio. Like all "bonsai seeds", the seeds will grow to full size if grown unrestrained in the ground and their future depends on your influence and training. To that end, I have written what I believe is the most comprehensive information package on the complete process of growing a bonsai from seed. P.S. Please note that 'Bloodgood' Japanese Maples grow best outdoors within USDA hardiness zones 5-8.
For best results, follow the procedure below to germinate your seeds.
1. Scarification: Soak in hot water for 24 hours, repeat the process on seeds that float.
2. Stratification: Warm stratify for 120 days, cold stratify for 120 days.
3. Plant!
*Can skip warm stratification period, however, this may reduce seed germination %.
*During stratification, store seeds in a Ziploc bag with damp sphagnum moss. paper towels, or soil in the refrigerator.
