Thank you for considering these stunning pieces of handmade craft! Offered here to showcase these beauties and highlight The Zienzele Foundation’s incredible work. Each is a unique jewel of craftsmanship - handwoven by women artisans affected by AIDS in rural Zimbabwe. From the word “Zienzele”, which means to be self reliant, the foundation is an all-volunteer small group created over 20 years ago with simple goals: to empower women, educate children and build community. The generated sales of these baskets pay school fees for over 800 children each year in the villages where each basket is lovingly produced.
These hand dyed, sisal fiber baskets are unique and involve a very labor intensive process that can take up to 40 hours. Every artist creates pieces with their own size, shape, colors and patterns. Refer to the photos of them together to get a sense of scale in relation to each other but dimensions are approximately:
1. XSmall - dark gray/brown and yellow starburst: 7 5/8” wide x 1” tall
2. Medium - off-white & dark/black checkerboard: 9 3/4” wide x 1 1/2” tall
3. Medium - dark gray with black/yellow arrows: 11 1/4” wide x 1 1/2” tall
4. Large - dark/black with off white lines: 13” wide x 1 1/2” tall
