Do you want to create a beautiful gift to donate to premature and sick babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit? This is the template and instructions on how to do just that.
“Freddy frogs” are positioning devices made by the Philips Company. They are used in the NICU to help keep small babies positioned correctly and to provide boundaries that help make babies feel safe and secure.
Freddy frogs are plastic pellet filled sacks with “legs” that look like frog legs splayed out - hence the name. The sacks are made of durable jersey knit and can be laundered, sanitized, and reused. With repeated use the sacks become stained by milk and the inevitable baby spit up.
These instructions show you how to make freddy frog covers (not the actual freddy frogs).
NICU staff like to use these covers on the freddy frogs to help protect the inner sack and make them last longer and to “dress up” the baby’s bed. The nurses love to mix and match all the adorable designs and colors. In our NICU our nurses compete for the "Best Bed Maker" title. Around the Holidays we like to fill our NICU with adorable snowmen, penguins, snowflakes, and wintery woodland creatures.
These instructions, available in PDF or Word doc format include a printable template and step by step instructions on this fun and easy project to make that will give you hours of stitching pleasure while creating something that can be used over and over again to add a little cheer in the NICU setting.
The template is the correct size when printed on 8.5inch x 11inch paper with no margins.
These covers are very forgiving and can be made with scraps of fabric. Don't worry if your seam isn't exactly straight, no-one will know.
These instructions were compiled for stitchers who intend to donate their creations to the NICU. Please do not use these instructions to make covers for commercial or home use (do not sell them!).
