You are buying two 2 San Marzano Tomato plants. These are not San Marzano Tomato Seeds. Two very nice, good sized plants, each 5-7 inches tall. They are not leggy, not plugs, not seeds. Individually grown and shipped in 3.5 inch pots. The generous pot size offers you plants with a well-developed root system, giving you a head start to fruit. A thicker flesh and less seed content than most "roma" style tomatoes Easy to grow, they bear later in the season but will produce until frost The best cooking tomato as the cooking process brings out the exceptional sweetness of this tomato. The San Marzano Tomato is a tomato with a rich history, dating back to the 1700's in Naples Italy. As it is the most famous plum tomato used for making sauce, the San Marzano tomato is preferred by Gourmet chefs all over the world. In Italy and Europe, they are a household name. In the United States specialty stores and grocers sell imported and certified San Marzano tomatoes for high prices. It is said to be the only tomato sauce allowed on a Neapolitan pizza, "otherwise it's just meat and sauce," as one Italian cook puts it. If you compare a San Marzino to the Roma tomato, they are thinner and more pointed at the end, yet its flesh is much thicker and has less seeds, and the taste is stronger, sweeter and less acidic. These wonderful tomatoes are great for canning, tomato paste, salsas, or any recipe that requires cooking-which really brings out the sugar in the fruit. The 3.5- 4 inch fruits of the plant grow in abundant clusters on a 6 foot tall, wide spreading, hearty plant. San Marzano tomato plants bear later in the season, but come on fast and furious once started. Place plants 18-24 inches apart in a full sun location. A rich well-draining soil is needed along with a weekly watering of 1-2 inches of water. When planting these and all other tomatoes, plant to a soil depth just beneath the first set of leaves. That first set of leaves (called cotyledon-which means the embryonic first leaves) will eventually fall off. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root, thus a stronger plant. Don't water too late in the evening. You want the plants to dry thoroughly before night. Too many problems with fungus start when you continuously water tomatoes late in the evening. You will need to stake or cage these abundant producers to support the intense clusters of tomatoes as they grow. Highly disease resistant, they are easy tomatoes to grow. Harvest 85-90 days after seeding, continuing until the first hard frost. Plants will be shipped priority mail. We will watch the weather to see if shipping to your area is viable. Temps in the 20's and low 30's aren't good for live plants. If you order, we will ship quickly or be in touch. Shipping to continental US only.
