Our Lady of the Hens (Italian: Madonna delle Galline) is a unique and beloved Marian devotion celebrated with deep affection in the town of Pagani, Italy. The origins of this devotion are steeped in a charming and miraculous tradition that reflects the deep bond between the Blessed Virgin Mary and the everyday lives of the faithful.
According to the tradition, centuries ago, a group of hens scratching at the earth discovered a hidden wooden statue of the Madonna and Child. The statue was buried beneath the soil, possibly concealed there to protect it during a time of turmoil. When the statue was unearthed by these humble creatures, the townspeople of Pagani saw this as a clear sign of divine intervention and quickly recognized the special significance of this image of the Virgin Mary.
In honor of this miraculous discovery, the people of Pagani began to venerate the image as Our Lady of the Hens. This devotion grew over the years and became an integral part of the local culture, culminating in the annual Feast of Our Lady of the Hens, celebrated with great joy on the first Sunday after Easter.
