SHINOLA UNVEILS FIRST DETROIT CITY CLOCK AT COBO CENTER
The Watchmakers of Detroit Gift City Clocks to Four Destinations throughout Detroit
March 7, 2014 (DETROIT) - Shinola, known for its handcrafted Detroit-built watches, bicycles,
journals, shoe polish, and leather goods, unveiled today the first of four Shinola City Clocks it installed
at landmarks across greater downtown Detroit in advance of Daylight Saving Time. The functional
works of art were gifted by Shinola to Cobo Center, Eastern Market Corporation, Midtown Detroit,
Inc. and the College for Creative Studies.
Inspired by the city clocks that became popular fixtures on sidewalks of American cities in the late
1800s, Shinola’s American-made city clocks are either pole or wall mounted, and created in the style
of Shinola’s future pocket watch design. Shinola commissioned Electric Time® Company, a more than
80-year-old specialty city clockmaker in Massachusetts, to manufacture the clocks. The double-sided
clock face has a diameter of more than three feet and the pole mounted versions stand at 13 feet tall.
The clocks are also accompanied with LED lights and stainless steel casing.
“Since we began our journey in this great city, we have been overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and
support shown by the Detroit community,” said Steve Bock, CEO of Shinola. “We feel privileged to
have the city clocks among some of the most notable places in Detroit and hope they are enjoyed by
all.”
Shinola partnered with the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority to install the first city clock
outside of Cobo Center, which was unveiled in a ceremony this morning. As one of the largest
convention centers in the nation, Cobo draws millions of visitors each year. Currently located at the
corner of Washington Boulevard and West Larned Street, the clock will be moved to the newly
developed Cobo Square this fall.
In addition, Shinola City Clocks are now installed at some of the city’s most prominent landmarks
including:
Eastern Market: A wall-mounted city clock has been installed in Shed 3 of Eastern Market, the
largest historic market district in the United States. Once the renovations of the Shed 5 site are
complete, the clock will move to a permanent pole-mounted location at the newly developed outdoor
plaza. Eastern Market is a year-round weekly shopping tradition for thousands of metro Detroiters,
and also boasts a thriving wholesale market featuring high-quality locally grown produce and also
houses some of the region’s oldest specialty food and dining businesses.

Detroit: In one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods, a pole-mounted city clock now sits
at the future Midtown Detroit dog park development site located on the corner Cass Avenue and West
Canfield Street, near Shinola’s Detroit Flagship store and a growing district of independent retailers
including, City Bird, Nest, Run Detroit, Global Detroit Human, Hugh and Nora. More than two million
visitors come to Midtown annually to experience the largest concentration of cultural, educational and
medical institutions in southeast Michigan.
College for Creative Studies: A pole-mounted city clock is now located outside the home of the
world-renowned College for Creative Studies (CCS) and Shinola’s Headquarters and Watch Factory.
Located at the corner of West Milwaukee Street and Cass Avenue, the clock stands adjacent to the
historic Argonaut building, known as the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education. Shinola
has a unique collaboration with CCS and its students participate in Shinola-sponsored workshops,
including design courses on watches, bicycles, and leather goods.
