Manufacturer information: In 1815 John Doulton, a talented potter was asked by widow Martha Jones to join her small pottery and become a partner alongside herself and her foreman John Watts. The company became known as Doulton and Watts. Early manufacturing centered around stoneware, they became world experts in the manufacturing if stoneware drain pipes. Henry Doulton joined the company in 1835, in 1854 John Watts retired and the company became known as Doulton and Company. In 1860 Henry was convinced to start working with pupils from the neighbouring Lambeth School of Art, this move led to the company we know today. Henry Doulton was knighted in 1887 by Queen Victoria, in 1901, four years after Henry's death, Edward VII granted permission for the company to add "Royal" to the name.
