The coins were part of a hoard carried on the ill fated Spanish Galleon ‘El Cazador’.
In 1784, the El Cazador was sailing from Mexico to New Orleans with 400,000 8 Reales and a mixture of 50,000 coins of 1/2, 1, 2, and 4 Reales denominations.
She sank in the Gulf of Mexico with all hands and remained lost for 200 years until she was discovered by the fishing vessel ‘Mistake’ under Captain Jerry Murphy in 1993.
Following the tragic loss of life as well as the monetary value onboard, the Louisiana territory was ceded back to France and shortly thereafter one million square miles of land was sold to the United States as the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 under President Thomas Jefferson.
She is ‘the shipwreck that changed the world’ and shaped the United States as it is today!
