These coloured aglets (shoelace ends) are perfect for making your own shoe laces or repairing laces that have lost their tips. The end of the lace is inserted into the aglet, which has an inbuilt shrinking action when heat is applied, and they will typically shrink down to about half their initial size. Hair straighteners, a naked flame or boiling water are all viable heat applications to shrink them although more information will be sent with your order. The aglets are available in five different colours (red, green, blue, white and yellow) and in 2 diameters as follows:
* 4.8 mm in diameter (reducing to approx. 2.4 mm when shrunk)
* 3.2 mm in diameter (reducing to approx. 1.6 mm when shrunk)
If you have not previously used this type of aglet, we can offer the following advice by way of guidance:
• The 3.2 mm aglets are typically suitable for the most medium thickness round, oval and flat laces
• The 4.8 mm aglets are typically suitable for most ribbons and thicker, medium duty laces
* If you wish to work with very narrow laces or heavy duty, thicker laces, we have a separate listing which offers 2.4 mm and 6.4 mm diameter aglets which are clear and transparent. We also have a listing offering black, opaque aglets in all 4 diameters.
One aglet is typically 20 mm long although unless you advise us to the contrary, your order will be dispatched in a single length based on the ordered quantity multiplied by 20 mm. This will enable you to cut the aglet to the exact size you require as laces differ greatly in actual aglet length. It will also minimise wastage. Please note that the stated diameter sizes are the internal measurement. If you are unsure which size to purchase, you can always contact us for help via the Etsy message system. It is in any event important to try and buy the smallest unshrunk diameter that you think will accept the end of your lace or ribbon. This will give the best, neatest and tightest fitting result. If you are still unsure, we offer an option to buy a selection of each diameter and the listing currently offers 4 of each or 8 of each.
It is also important for you to be aware that commercially produced laces, such as those that come with new shoes, are produced using ultrasonic heating or plastic moulding machines that cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. It is consequently unlikely that your home produced laces will have a similar professional quality but the use of this heat shrink method is however universally accepted as a safe and, to most people, reasonable alternative.
