Betel vine is not grown commercially in the US because very few areas have the right growing conditions, but we are super lucky in South Florida to have the heat, humidity and lack of frost that this tropical vine needs in order to thrive. Betel leaf vine is in the same family as black pepper and looks very similar, growing thick waxy heart shaped leaves on a fast growing vine. However, with Betel you eat the leaf, not the flower or berry. While the leaves have historically been used to wrap Areca palm nuts for chewing its gained popularity recently for its unique culinary uses. The leaves taste like sausage. Very meaty and aromatic with lots of black pepper flavor. Vegan and vegetarian chefs have been taking advantage of this plant based umami flavor by using the leaves either as a seasoning or as a wrapping. There really is nothing like the flavor of betel, and its an essential ingredient in many recipes from Southeast Asia.
Growth will slow somewhat during the winter as temperatures cool and the plant can not tolerate any frost, so bring it inside for winter if your area freezes. In the Spring make sure to fertilize with composted chicken manure and/or kelp meal to encourage new growth. Betel plants ideally would have 4-6 hours of sun but not intense mid-day sun, instead they would do well to have access to early morning or late evening sun and partial shade in the hot parts of the day, and moist soil.
This listing is for 1 larger plant in a 1 gallon pot. We may remove the bamboo hoop support from the vine for shipping purposes.

All of our plants are grown with OMRI certified ingredients (potting mix, fertilizer, etc.). We only ship mature and fully rooted plants to ensure they are healthy and mature enough to survive the trip to your garden from their home in Miami, Florida. We are a specialty culinary & useful plant nursery located in the Redland historic agricultural district of Miami and have been serving South Florida for 10 years. While we are new to Etsy we are certainly not new to growing plants. Our mission is to empower people through connections with food and ecology. We ship plants every Monday from our nursery in South Florida so that they don’t spend any extra days in the mail. Cut off for orders placed Monday is 3pm. If you need your order expedited faster call or email us and if it’s possible we will get it out sooner. We will send tracking info as soon as your order is shipped.

Its normal for plants to loose some leaves or experience some discoloration while in transit because of the lack of light, so some damage of that type is to be expected and shouldn't effect the long term health of your plant. We also prune the tops off of some of our taller plants to make them fit more economically in a box, which is not only totally fine for your plant but for many of them it will actually benefit their growth since it will promote bushier growing patterns, especially with roselle, cranberry hibiscus & mulberry.
If your plants show up in very poor condition due to getting loose in the box or having their box crushed in the mail please document the damage and email us within 48 hours and we will either refund you or ship replacements. We do our best to package our plants securely in the smallest box possible (to save you money on shipping) and so damage does occur sometimes. Please contact us and let us make it right for you!
