This is a linocut print of “Prometheus on the rock”, inspired by, you guessed it, the Greek Myth of Prometheus. Tragic Prometheus stole fire from the Gods and gifted it to the human race. Once caught, his punishment was to be chained to a rock where every day circling eagles would descend and peck out his liver. Every day it would grow back - rinse and repeat.
In this stark black print, the only hint of colour comes from the wound Prometheus carries, whilst eagles circle in the distance.
This is hand printed onto a sheet of off-white Ho Sho Japanese paper, that is approximately A4, using Caligo safewash ink in black with a spot of red in water based ink. The printed area is approx. 15cm x 20cm, and is roughly centred on the page. I apply the black ink traditionally with a breyer, and mask over the wound. I then remove the masking and apply the red water based ink with a small brush.
Due to the method of printing and the ink there are variations in each print, and the block colour has unique patina and noise. Please have a look at the photo's for some examples of the coverage and variation.
Each print is signed, numbered and titled "Prometheus on the rock”. This is an open edition.
Each print is wrapped in acid-free tissue paper, and then sealed in cellophane before being posted in a card backed A4 envelope. These are sold without a frame.
To avoid waste, all my open editions are printed to order, which is why the lead time is a little longer. Inks gotta’ dry! If you have any comments or colour change requests, please message me directly. As these are to order, I'm more than happy to accommodate changes if possible.
