Navajo (Diné) Wedding Basket
This outstanding 12 point Navajo (Diné) Wedding basket was made in the mid 20th century. It has the unusual addition of sun bleached/ lightened sumac alongside the natural yellowish colored material, as a 4th color! Although this design is associated with weddings, baskets like this are also used for other ceremonies including healing and rites of puberty. This was woven the traditional way using willow rods for the core and split sumac to wrap each coil. The colors were produced with dyes from natural or commercial sources and the piece has a rich deep patina from age, like browned bread. This measures approx 13" H x 12.5" W x 1.75" D. These look wonderful hanging on the wall or on a stand behind other collectibles!
