Type: Panax Ginseng root.
Color: Brown.
Process: Whole American Ginseng root, cut.
Country: Appalachian Mountains, USA.
American Ginseng, Panax quinquefolium is a member of the Ivy plant family native to the eastern United States and Canada.
Due to over-harvesting and urban sprawl, American Ginseng is also commercially cultivated in woodlands or artificial forest settings in Minnesota, Maryland and Wisconsin, within the Appalachian Mountains, where it takes 4 to 10 years to mature before the roots are harvested.
The American Ginseng and its Asian counterpart, Panax Ginseng are considered adaptogenic - an herb that helps the body cope with stress and resist disease. The whole dried American Ginseng roots are used in tea blends and to make infusions, tinctures, and liquid extracts.
SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO PREPARE:
Based on the age of the Gingseng root, it can be very hard. To soften the root, wash and soak it in water or milk overnight or for a few hours during the day. Cut the soaked root into slices and use. For quick use of the root, a pressure cooker can be used for a few minutes to soften the root.
