Rare 1920’s Fortuny “Boucher” Style pattern Wall Hanging. Designed and named for Fortuny’s friend the French art historian Francois Leon Louis Boucher, who was a curator of the Carnavalet museum in Paris in the early 1920’s. The fabric is pale green sage with subtle undertones with parchment overlay, deeply saturated on the backside blue/green as seen in the pictures.
Before formal pattern descriptions with names were created this piece does have the Soc. An. Fortuny Depose stamp. The design is more playful and less floral in style and likely a one off prototype pattern in its early stages of development. This piece has more fantasy creatures then the newer Boucher fabric printed today I assume due to discretion.
The subtle color saturation throughout Fortuny pieces is due to the fact these fabrics were hand printed and would have had different hand applied pressure to the stamp or stencil (it is still a guarded secret). Interesting to note there is no pattern repeat in 59” of length. The dyes used and his process are what Fortuny is most known for in his fabrics. Noticeable in this textile are light striations from hand pressing the dyes.
Condition is excellent unused prior to this being made. Interlined with a light weight “baby” flannel and lined with a pale sage green linen. Tabs at the top for mounting to a pole or rod (not included). The center tab has a remnant piece of this fabric and the signature stamp at the back, see images. This is one of the lightweight cotton fabrics used in the beginning of his production.
Piece measures 26 1/4” wide by 59” long, 2 ½” tabs make the dimensions overall 61 ½” long.
I have handled a lot of Fortuny and this is a pattern never seen before and likely will not again.
