I use my ipod daily and I lives in my pocket together with my card holder. Before the would sit against each other and the ipod would scratch up, because of the bumper there now is a small gap in between and the ipod stays scratch free. Same principle on flat services, the shiny back doesn't touch so won't scratch as easily.
