Jesus, in the tenth chapter of the gospel of John, confirms that he is indeed the gate to salvation. Mary’s title of being the Gate of Heaven, thus, alludes to other attributes that she offers in the divine-human interaction.
“Then the man brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east, and it was shut. The Lord said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no one may enter through it. It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it. The prince himself is the only one who may sit inside the gateway to eat in the presence of the Lord. He is to enter by way of the portico of the gateway and go out the same way.”
Over the years Mary has often been referred to as the second Eve and this passage from Ezekiel has been attributed to her as the gate from many theologians. As you recall, the “gate” of paradise was shut behind Eve and Adam as their pure and honest relationship with God was broken through disobedience. Mary, on the other hand, through her obedience, becomes the gate by which the divine enters humanity via Christ’s incarnation. It is a restoration where Heaven and earth meet; where Heaven comes down to restore all created things, and brings them back into full harmony with their Creator.
As God had brought forth Adam and Eve into the garden of Paradise, so Mary brings God forth out of Paradise through the fruit of her Garden. God walked with Adam and Eve in Paradise, and now walks with the new Eve, Mary, on Earth.
