Antique white and gold tea set including teapot, sugar bowl, creamer, three tea cups and five saucers. This set is a stunning example of hard paste porcelain, with exuberant Rococo inspired shapes combined with more restrained Empire style painted designs. The composition of the porcelain, the forms and the gold design with accents of pink and blue are typical of Old Paris Porcelain, Porcelain de Paris, although as with many early pieces there are no marks. The set is almost certainly from the period 1830 to 1890.
Size: Teapot is 7.25 inches high (with lid) by 7.25 inches wide spout to handle; 5 inches across. Sugar bowl is 6 inches high (with lid) by 5.75 inches handle to handle; 4.5 inches across. Creamer is 5.5 inches high by 4.75 inches spout to handle; 3 inches across. Teacups are 2 inches high by 3.25 inches (with handle); 2.5 inches across. Saucers are 5.25 inches across.
Condition: There are condition issues on these pieces. On sugar bowl and creamer there is breakage that has been repaired, probably at some time mid twentieth century or before. A piece was repaired on the creamer's spout, while on the sugar bowl a chip out of the rim was glued back. The bonds seem very strong but the adhesive is noticeably brown in some areas. There is loss of gold on many pieces, especially notable on one of the teacups. On the inside of the teapot lid, the small stoppers on the flange are chipped, but this damage is almost invisible.
This tea set is over a hundred and fifty years old but has survived with so much glamor and beauty.
