Lettering: DATE L.50 Engraver: Giuseppe Romagnoli History and meaning: Vulcan was the Roman god of fire and metalworking and is often depicted with a blacksmith's hammer. He was the son of Jupiter and Juno. When he was born, Juno was so offended by his tiny size and ugly, red, bawling face, that she threw him into the sea from the top of Mount Olympus. Vulcan broke one of his legs and sank to the bottom of the ocean where he was adopted by the sea-nymph Thetis. Vulcan had a happy childhood playing with dolphins and pearls in Thetis's underwater grotto, but poor little Vulcan grew up with a limp. One day, Vulcan found a red-hot coal on the beach and discovered that he could make fire. He created iron, silver and gold from stones and made a silver chariot for his seahorses and jewellery and cutlery for Thetis. During a party on Mount Olympus, Juno admired Thetis’ beautiful necklace and discovered that Vulcan had grown into a talented blacksmith. Furious Juno commanded Vulcan to return home, but instead, he sent her a beautiful chair made of silver, gold and mother-of-pearl. When Juno sat in it, hidden springs and metal bands trapped her for three days until Jupiter offered Vulcan a wife (Venus, the goddess of love and beauty) in return for freeing Juno. Vulcan married Venus and built a smithy under Mount Etna on the island of Sicily. The legend goes that whenever Venus was unfaithful, Vulcan would beat red-hot metal until the sparks and smoke would create a volcanic eruption. In Greek mythology Vulcan's counterpart was Hephaestus. He was the son of Zeus and Hera and was known as the god of artisans, blacksmiths, carpenters, craftsmen, fire, metallurgy, metalwork, sculpting and volcanoes. This gorgeous Italian coin has been cleaned and polished to a satisfying shine. A really cool gift or perhaps a birthday treat for someone who loves bashing metal and appreciates the unique beauty of coins from the past.
