He saw following the Master as a literal endeavor, what he would come to describe as a “downward mobility.” This upside-down Kingdom pursuit was in fact the polar opposite of the ways of the world which championed success through climbing up the ladder of riches, power, and prestige. Nouwen would relinquish a position at Harvard Divinity School in favor of serving as pastor at the L’Arche community in Toronto for the last ten years of his life. It was here, serving those with mental disabilities, where Nouwen would find his core freedom in Christ. In his book, The Selfless Way of Christ: Downward Mobility and the Spiritual Life, Nouwen points to three temptations that not only Jesus had to deal with in the Desert, but that have continued to plague the Church to this day. These are the temptations to be relevant, spectacular, and powerful. Jesus would fight all three throughout his life, relinquishing glory, riches and power for the ultimate sake of the Kingdom. His life would be one of “downward mobility” and “self-emptying.” The Apostle Paul encouraged his readers to also “have this attitude.” Nouwen writes: Indeed, the one who was from the beginning with God and who was God revealed himself as a small, helpless child; as a refugee in Egypt...as a man who ate with sinners and talked with strangers; as an outcast, a criminal, a threat to his people. He moved from power to powerlessness, from greatness to smallness, from success to failure, from strength to weakness, from glory to ignominy. The whole life of Jesus of Nazareth was a life in which all upward mobility was resisted. “Our vocation,” he goes onto write, “is to follow Jesus on his downward path and to become witnesses to God’s compassion in the concrete situation of our time and place. Our temptation is to let needs for success, visibility, and influence dominate our thoughts, words, and actions to such an extent that we are gripped in the destructive spiral of upward mobility and thus lose our vocation.” NOTE: ALL INTERNATIONAL ORDERS SHIP WITHOUT MATTING.
