The story behind the Hannya mask is one of rage and jealousy, tragedy and heartbreak. According to legend, a woman named Hannya was once deeply in love with a man, but he spurned her advances. A woman who was once jilted by her lover now became consumed with anger and hatred. In her anger and jealousy, Hannya became possessed by a demon, and her face was turned into a fearsome thing and she transformed into a monster. The mask is said to represent the intense rage and fury of unrequited love. This mask also represents the darkest part of human emotion and is a warning against giving in to anger and envy.

The colors of the mask indicates the type of hannya. There are red, green, and blue masks. The red mask indicates a jealous hannya - a true demon. The green mask indicates a compassionate hannya. The blue mask indicates a sad hannya. Each type of hannya has their own personality and backstory. Jealous, compassionate, and sad hannyas are all capable of committing heinous acts if provoked.
