A beautiful beaded necklace known as a sautoir in the 1920s. Traditionally, it looked like an elongated necklace worn over the shoulder to hang down to the middle of the naked back. Its name comes from the French porter en sautoir, which literally translates as “to be worn on the back / over the shoulder.” However, Coco Chanel popularized the wearing of sautoirs in the 1920s as necklaces. She often wore a pearl sautoir with a tassel at the end, although she didn’t refuse models in the form of chains with beads or large medallions. The more modern versions are also known as lariat necklaces - long linear style with decorative drop.
This one is exquisite and consists of a feature panel in the middle, with straight beaded strings to two small section feature pieces, small ornate glass beads painted gold and one larger wooden bead covered in beads. Then twisted strands of beads to a larger wood oval shaped bead with the two glass beads each side, more twisted strands of beads to another finishing oval bead with a tassel of vertical beaded strings - totally amazing. The blue microbeads are a vibrant cornflower blue colour interlaced with the feature bronzy gold microbeads.
A very special antique fashion statement piece. It would make beautiful boudoir decor and whilst it could be worn for a special event it would need to be handled carefully. It has been handmade with love and we are totally in awe of its history, craftsmanship and beauty.
MEASUREMENTS
The total length from end to end of each tassel is 59.5" (151cm)
The width of the centre panel is just over 1" (3cm) which is the widest part of the piece. Apart from the tassels which obviously spray out but gathered together they measure 1.5" at the end in width.
CONDITION
The condition overall is good. There are some missing beads and some repairs have taken place as you can see cotton thread in places. The middle section is fully intact though and this is the most visible part. The tassels are also incredible. All fully intact one side but a bare end piece to just one section on the other (see photo 10). Surprisingly the beads are not bouncing off though and you do not notice this at is buried with the others.
On this same side the last vertical section of beads has unravelled slightly. See photo 9 which has been magnified and shows the thread from a repair.
Photo 8 shows you the opposite side which has also been repaired. Again this is magnified and is on the final bottom section.
One of the oval wood balls is not completely covered with beads. They flop about a bit and you can see the wood slightly, as shown in photo 7. They are still all intact though, although one row is missing some beads.
It would be impossible for us to check every single beaded section. We always study our pieces very carefully and make a note of anything obvious but this is an antique and hopefully saw lots of action in its' flapper days'! It is something to be treated with respect.
