This stylishly square makeup vanity dressing table from the mid-century has a bold visual appeal with a large panel of frameless glass mirror on top of two side sections, each with 2 drawers, and a recessed lower shelf with one hidden drawer (total of 5 drawers).
The side drawers have recessed fronts with a most unusual x-form wooden handle within the drawer front design. The handles have a slight curvature, juxtaposed to the very rectangular framework, makes it a great focal point.
And it has its original matching wide, square/rectangular bench on tapered square legs.
It is just screaming 1950s!
It was actually made in the later 1940s and can be considered late art deco or transitional, as the streamline look was being replaced by the very angular 1950s to 60s fashions to come.
The finish appears to be the original blond color. This was very modern, fashion-forward for its day, and it's somewhat timeless. You can easily work this into a modern/contemporary setting as well as vintage-inspired.
The craftsmanship is very nice, very sturdy and well built. The drawers dovetailed and finished throughout. It's very much in keeping with the golden age of American furniture production during the mid-century.
It is stamped on the back of the mirror "Y.M.G. Co. March 1948 York PA"
This most likely stands for York Manufacturing Group. A similar company name is famous throughout the history of the late 19th and 20th centuries for its machine and air conditioning manufacture, but I'm uncertain if this may be the same maker. I'm unaware if they ever ventured into furniture making, but I'm not aware of any other York-based makers who may have used the name.
The mirror is removeable for safe moving purposes, as it attaches to the back of the pieces with two long wooden struts which screw down. The glass panel is also removeable from the wooden framework, as it slides into the frame and is held on by a few clips.
It's heavy and a bit nerve-wracking sliding that big glass in place, but at least no tools are required. This will however make transport a bit risky. Local pickup or regional delivery preferred. There's a chance that long-range shipping carriers may decline this item due to the risk of breakage involved with large glass components, in which case we may have to cancel an order. But I'm willing to try to get it shipped if necessary.
The bench seat is a standard slip type, which screws on from the underside, and can be easily recovered.
The present fabric is a cool fuzzy white material, which may have some stains. It is not original and was added by a former owner. The contents of the seat stuffing are unknown and cannot be guaranteed.
The current finish has mars, marks, scratches, wear and tear, as you'd expect from used wood furniture of this type and age. This may include some minor wood chips, the most noticeable of which is on the bottom edge of the center shelf drawer. The manufacturer made an indentation along the bottom edge of the drawer front, designed to catch your fingers to pull the drawer open, but this has left the front edge of the drawer a bit thin and therefore damage prone as users' shoes and vacuum cleaners bumped into it over the years, chipping the wood.
It's fairly clean, including inside the drawers, but it does have some marks and stains inside, typical of old vanities.
This piece is nice enough to be used as found, if you are not terribly picky about condition, or you might consider it for a restoration by a profession or your own at-home DIY refinishing or chalk paint project!
