CURING YOUR GOURD
Curing the mate just means that you seal the inside of the gourd. There are many ways to do this. Most believe that the gourd is cured just by using it. Others do this extra step. The easiest is to fill the gourd with yerba mate or ground coffee, fill with water and let sit for 12 hours. Then dump, rinse and you are ready to go. Note that the first few times using your gourd, the color will run. Be sure to place something under the gourd like a plate so you do not stain anything. After 2-3 uses, this stops. It is part of the curing process. No chemical sealants can be used.
FILLING YOUR MATE CUP
Heat until water steams, but does not boil. Any water that is too hot will “wash” the tea leaves and make for a very weak tea after a few servings. Pour water into a pitcher or thermos that allows for a “narrow stream” to pour out. If you have decided to sweeten the water, add your honey, sugar or stevia. Fill the mate (cup) with yerba (tea leaves) about ¾ of the way full. Put your palm over the opening and shake so that the leaves mix. Turn the mate right side up. Add water to the top of the mate, sip through a straw and enjoy. If it needs a bit of sweetener, add more.
Fill below bottom rim of ring.
CLEANING YOUR MATE CUP
With a small spoon or your finger, scoop out all the tea. Rinse well and set to dry.

Yerba Mate (pronounced err-ba-mah-te) is a nutrient dense herb that grows in South America. The leaves of the plant, are picked and dried to brew into a tea by the same name, Yerba Mate, or more commonly referred to as just “mate.” The Mate is most commonly served in a gourd or cup and sipped through a strainer straw called a Bombilla. This tea has many health benefits as that can be found on our website.
