When I first got the gorgeous blue-green cotton that makes up most of this dress home, I realized that it is the color of the background in one of my favorite paintings, Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus." It was originally designed as another magnificent Regency frock, but perhaps as a result of its namesake it ended up being equally believable as a garment from the mid-to-late 1400s.
The beautiful teal color of the bodice and skirt is accented by a fabulous blue scrolling brocade in the short puff sleeves and bodice inset. A lovely gold accented trim wraps the front of the bodice and around the back. The dress closes with hooks and eyes on the side, with a button on the front to complete the wraparound illusion. The center back of the skirt is gathered for a little extra elegance and historical accuracy.
I wore this dress for Easter this year. From a period perspective, it is an evening dress, but it could be equally at home at a picnic, party, or wedding.
