This piece is a quite scarce and great looking artist figure that comes from the Stewart of California Pottery Company. This is one of a number of different motion picture film stars figures created by this pottery company. They were produced during the 1940's. This piece is one of film star Anna May Wong. She is featured in the reference guide..."California Pottery Scrapbook" by author Jack Chipman back in 2004. There was a trend during the 1940's on into the 1950's of making figuries of the stars of the earlier times. I've seen one for Josephine Baker and another for Claudette Colbert...neither of which were for sale. Anna May is in a very seductive upright yet reclining position...almost vampish! The basic color here is soft white.She reclines a full 9 1/4 inches tall...her heigth [head to base] is 6 inches...at her widest point which is her fingertips left hand to right is 7 1/8 inches.Her hand painted face is wonderful! She also carries hand incised script markings on her base...."Stewart of Calif " and also an artist signature for Howard Whalen [Gallery Pics. # 11 & 12].He was a very fascinating man, actor, photographer and sculptor. He was apprentence to Waylande Gregory at the Cranbrook Art Academy.I remember Gregory for his own impressive art pottery creations and who was tied closely with R.G. Cowan of Cowan Pottery.
