This listing is for a banded, carnelian Oregon river agate with thick covering of quartz crystal. The underside has some host rock still present followed by a bold layering of orange carnelian agate. Above that, is some banded layer all the way around the agate with some deep orange/reddish coloring. The top half is covered by quartz crystal.
**Note: The last 3 pictures show what the agate looks like wet to highlight the color & banding formations.

This agate was found within the Siuslaw National Forest (Lane County, Oregon), west of the Cascade Mountain Range.
Agates are quite special in that it is a mineral that’s never been able to be replicated in a laboratory. Agates develop over millions of years in metamorphic, igneous & volcanic rocks with the right combination of time, water and moganite due to Oregon’s rich & violent volcanic history. Agates are typically composed of chalcedony, silica & quartz. The many different colors that agates can have are attributed to small amounts of additional trace minerals & impurities that made their way into the agate cavity during its formation; ie: copper, iron oxides, sulfur, etc. This process happened by seeping groundwaters.
The average age of Oregon agates ranges between 13 & 25 million years.
The ornamental use of agates goes back to Ancient Greece, and was worn by Greek warriors and the use of polished agates date back to the 3rd millennium BCE in the Indus Valley. The name it has today was given by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and naturalist, who discovered the stone along the shores of the Drillo River in Sicily.
