These unlacquered/unfinished brass shelf rails add detail and elegance to any shelf or surface. Please note that although these pieces are all unfinished brass, but are not a kit before I procure them. Differences in their initial patina can exist, but they do mellow out to a more consistent tone across pieces over time.
The rail length segments thread into the post heads, meaning the middle posts do not slide over the rail lengths but rather each rail segment threads into each side of the posts (giving the look of one long continuous rail).
Corner posts come with a special return length that has two-row threading on one end. A normal threaded rail piece will then fit into the other corner threaded hole. End posts must be purchased separately from the corner + return pieces.
Bottom line for estimating total length of the rail system - add up rail lengths, and add slightly over 1 inch to that number.
In other words, make sure you have at minimum 2 inches more room than the rails add up to to ensure the rail system will fit when assembled with the posts (ie for a 30" shelf you'd want your rails alone to add up to no more than 28" - the posts will then add slightly more than an inch of length to what the rails add up to).
The rails come in a variety of lengths, and you can mix and match to accommodate even more shelf sizes.
The Installation Took Kit (optional purchase add on) provides a 1.5mm drill bit and a small flat head screw driver, providing you with the accessories you need for a smooth and convenient installation process.
Helpful information re. Measurements:
- Posts are 2 1/8" tall
- Rails are 3/8" in diameter
- Top of rail height is 2"
- Rail lengths include the 3/16" of thread on each end (except for return rails which only have 2 rows of threading on one side)
- Rail lengths thread into post heads, nearly meeting in the middle. However, 1/16" - 1/8" of space will remain and should be accounted for in total length of the assembled rail system
- Post base flanges are 1 inch across. On end posts, this means that you need 1/2" of space from the end of the rail length. Of this 1/2", 1/4" is part of the post, 1/4" is just flange itself.
- When including corner posts and return lengths, remember to factor in the space needed for the set back from the front of the shelf as well as the posts to ensure your return rail is the right length.
Example to estimate your total rail system length:
48" shelf -
Customer orders 3 x 15 inch rail lengths, two end posts and 2 middle posts (it's helpful to draw it out on paper to determine amounts needed).
How long is the total assembled rail?
1) add up rail lengths (example - 3 x 15 inch rails = 45 inches)
2) add an additional 1/16" - 1/8" per middle post (example 2 x middle posts = 1/8" - 1/4")
3) add 1 inch to account for end post base flange (each end accounts for 1/2")
Example: 45 inches + 1/8" - 1/4" + 1 inch
= 46 1/8" - 1/4"
Or in simpler terms, it comes to a little over an inch longer than the rails add up to.
