About the Designer: Sphinx 1948-1990
One of the few English costume jewellery companies, Sphinx was founded in 1948 by S. Root.
They employed 200-300 people at their factory in Chiswick, London.
Sphinx manufactured pieces for designers like Kenneth Jay Lane, Butler & Wilson and shops such as Saks and Bloomingdales. Pieces were often unsigned for designers to sell as their own, or simply marked with the design number.
They ceased production in the mid 1990's.
