Century Plant or Agave americana is the largest of the native Texas Agaves. Agave Americana can grow to six feet in height. Its leaves are grayish-blue with sharp spines at the tips and along their side edges. Makes a great landscape focal point or accent and can be used in pots away from foot traffic. Century plants actually only live around 25 years, the 100 years is an exaggeration. At the end of its life it will send out a huge flower stalk that can be over 15 feet tall. Once it flowers, it will soon die, but not before it is replaced by one of its small offshoots or pups. Grows in dry, gravelly soils, and is extremely drought resistant. It is hardy to 20 degrees F., USDA Zone 8. Needs full sun and well draining soil to thrive.
Due to it's extremely sharp spines, Agave americana must be handled with care.
