This is a handcrafted leather hairpin with a wooden pin featuring a Luna Moth. I hand-carved, hand-dyed, and hand-painted it. The moth is a 3D leather sculpture and is firmly attached to a black leather base. A black wooden pin fastens it over a ponytail.
Here's how I made the luna moth hairpin:
Hand-Cut Cowhide: I templated each piece of the luna moth and hairpin base individually and traced them onto part a large cowhide side. Then, I hand-cut each piece with heavy-duty shears and blades and skived the edges of the pieces to smooth them. I used thin leather for the moth and thicker leather for the hairpin base.
Hand-Punched Stitching Holes: I hand-punched every stitching hole for accurate stitching with waxed thread later in the process.
Hand-Carved and Hand-Tooled: I designed the pattern by first drawing a draft on paper, then transferred it to tracing film, then I traced it onto damp leather with a stylus tool. I carved it with a swivel knife and tooled it to add depth to the pattern.
Hand-Dyed: I hand-dyed the base of the hairpin with black leather stain. I coated it with a clear sealant to make it weather resistant.
Hand-Painted: I painted the luna moth with tough and flexible acrylic leather paint and sealed it to protect against scratches. Parts of the moth are pearlescent and metallic, and shine in the light.
Hand-Stitched: I hand-stitched each piece of the hairpin together with sturdy waxed thread. I then painted over it to create a seamless look.
