USS Bataan LHD-5 is named in honor of the defense of the Bataan Peninsula on the western side of Manila Bay in the Philippines during the early part of World War II. She was built in 1994 by Ingalls shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi and commissioned in 1997. She is capable of transporting up to almost 1,700 US Marine troops and landing them in hostile territory using landing craft and/or helicopters. That means that she enables the US Navy and Marines to transition smoothly from sea to land battle. Also, she has been involved in many dangerous and noble humanitarian efforts such as the aftermath of the attacks of 9/11, the Iraq War, Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake to name a few. Her motto most appropriately is: “Courage, Commitment, Honor”.
