They need to be properly sanded before staining. We use putty to cover in the staple holes. If you don't sand them properly they will stain a different shade. These are our DIY finished cornhole board game sets. They have been sanded, but you'll likely want to do a little more sanding prior to painting/staining/vinyling, we suggest a 220 grit sand paper.
