As the temperature increases, paraffin wax expands, pushing against a plunger and spring, which directly actuates the valve. As coolant temperature decreases, the thermostat body is cooled. Therefore, the paraffin wax shrinks, and a return spring pushes against the valve and plunger to return the thermostat to a partially open or closed position.   The opening temperature of paraffin thermostats is primarily dependent on the spring rate of the return spring. The stiffer the spring, the greater the pressure the wax needs to generate to push the plunger. This wax chamber’s pressure is directly proportional to wax temperature.
