Camellia japonica 'Daikagura' The name of this spring-blooming camellia means 'Great Sacred Dance,' and refers to one of the oldest forms of traditional performing arts in Japan in which ordinary objects are used to create extraordinary experiences.  The 'Daikagura' camellia is anything but ordinary; its peony-form bloom displays stunning yet variable coloration, ranging from carmine red with white blotches to mostly white with pink edging. Some flowers will bloom solid red. Just like a good show, 'Daikagura' is full of pleasant surprises. The evergreen shrub displays slow, compact growth and grows in part shade to dappled sun. Be sure to use a well drained soil medium when planting any Camellia as they prefer less watering than you might think. In NC our soil is clay so we prefer to use pine bark soil conditioner when planting Camellia, Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, and Azalea.
