'Edgar's baby' dragon fruit is a new hybrid variety created by Edgar Valdiva, a fruit cultivator who felt this particular variety of dragon fruit held a special quality worthy of his namesake. A member of the Cactaceae family, it is a fruit cactus vine related to the Pitaya as well as the White Vietnamese Dragon Fruit and bears native roots in South America.
Once the cactus vine reaches around 5 feet, the plant will begin to produce green, medium-sized blossoms that grow into green-skinned fruit with dark-fuchsia flesh. To best know when to pick, keep track of when your flowers open, because ripening typically takes roughly 32 days thereafter. The inside of the fruit hosts sweet, tangy flesh containing lycopene antioxidants and a terrific flavor. Find yourself a good trellis, and watch this gorgeous vine blossom into a terrific treat!
It prefers well-drained, loose sandy cactus mix. A well draining, sandy soil. Water only when soil dries out completely. is self-sterile and needs cross-pollination. Fruit is in season late-summer to fall. On average, it will grow 4-6 feet but can grow up to 20 feet. Enjoys full sun and part shade.
