Forcing Hyacinths indoors on water is simple, easy, and fun. It just takes a little patience. We even supply a special glass. Anyone can do it. Hyacinths bulbs will require a period of cooling before they will bloom. By using our prepared bulbs you speed up this process. First, place the bulbs for 5 - 6 weeks in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. Then fill the special forcing glass with water to just below the area where the bulb will rest ( the bulb will reach for the water). Place the hyacinth bulb in the cup, root end down and growing end up (growth may already be showing) so the base is barely touching the water. First place the vase in a cool dark area (basement) to encourage root and shoot growth. When the shoots are about 2 in. tall move the vase to a bright windowsill, and watch as it begins its blooming ballet. Periodically change the water and keep the level at the base of the bulb. Turn it every day to keep it growing upright. Do not store hyacinth bulbs next to fruit, and wear gloves when handling the bulbs, as they may cause a skin reaction and can be an eye irritant. Forced bulbs do not usually make the transition to outside garden plants, so toss them in the compost bin once the nearly two-week fragrant show is over.
