Elon Musk, Grimes and X Æ A-12 allows us to take a closer look at the tools of culture, consciousness, feelings and beliefs that uphold Elon, Grimes and X Æ A-12’s reality. Their glass pregnancy bellies are both a vessel and a glossy veneer displaying a range of different objects which represent the inner workings of their minds and transport consciousness, feeling and belief from one space and time into another. The glass bellies reference Ursula Le Guin’s The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction and her desire to reframe history. Le Guin argued that the first tool was in fact not a spear, a weapon of violence and competition, but actually a vessel – a ‘carrier bag’: “Before the tool that forces energy outward, we made the tool that brings energy home.” Elon Musk, Grimes and X Æ A-12 feature in Keiken's recently released game Wisdoms for Love 3.0. Based between London and Berlin, they come from mixed diasporic backgrounds (Mexican/Japanese/European/Jewish). They are building a collective shared space of virtual worlds, a Metaverse. Keiken, the Japanese word for experience, create speculative worlds, using moving-image, CGI, gaming software, installation, virtual and augmented reality, programming and performance to merge the physical and digital.
