The art was first unveiled in Paris where, in 1961, 300 black citizens were murdered in a state sanctioned genocide by drowning in response to Algeria’s decolonization. The piece is displayed above the waters in France upturned, giving a new sense of agency to its subject. With “The Highs & The Lows,” Guibinga and The Rapper have captured the duality of emotions felt by billions of Black people around the world, who overtime have given themselves agency.
