Design Statement by Richard Danne The Story of “The Worm” “This watch represents pure joy for me and is the culmination of a long, fruitful relationship with NASA." It was 1974 when the firm of Danne & Blackburn, with partner Bruce Blackburn, was selected to redesign the U.S. Space Agency. I began serving as External Design Director for NASA, a role that lasted for another ten productive years. During that time, the iconic NASA Graphics Standards Manual was fully completed and honored with a U.S. “Presidential Award for Design Excellence” in 1985.

Then in 2020, working with a remarkable NASA design committee, I helped update the Agency’s Design Guidelines to give our Logotype more prominence in the future. This watch design is inspired by Space itself – its beauty, its silence, its rotating planets. The project caps an extraordinary involvement with the NASA family, one like no other and very close to my heart.”–– Richard Danne *Space Watch is a DanneDesign project with Anicorn Watches. In 1974, Richard Danne with his partner Bruce Blackburn, founders of New York design studio Danne & Blackburn, responded to the brief to rebrand NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). In the end, they only presented one solution – the red, curvy bold logotype spelling out N-A-S-A with no cross strokes in the A's. This fully functional and future-looking design was later to become known as “The Worm''. With Richard Danne as Design Director, D & B  created the 90-page ultimate brand manual, setting the perfect example of brand design which continues to inspire and educate younger designers even today. IMAGE: NASAThe Worm logo was retired from official use in 1992 with the revival of “The Meatball” logo designed by NASA’s staff James Modarelli in 1959. Even though The Worm had been retired, the public and designers continued to love it. The logo is famous and everywhere, people regard The Worm as an icon of space and human endeavor. The outside world has enthusiastically kept The Worm alive! -“Richard Danne is the quintessential designer, AIGA Medalist, and mentor. His work at NASA is an epic story of visual invention and what it means to bring an idea to life.”–– Julie Anixter, Former AIGA Executive Director“The NASA design program ranks among the best of the last 50 years!”–– Sean Adams, Director, Graphic Design Graduate Program - ArtCenter College“You should feel gratified, and vindicated, that your work resonates with so many people after all these years. But, of course, that’s what it means to be timeless.”–– Michael Bierut, Pentagram partnerAbout the NASA Graphic Standards Manual reissue book: “It is wonderful to have a classic piece of 20th century design revived for younger generations.”–– Kit Hinrichs, Founder, Studio Hinrichs   The Comeback In May 2020, NASA reinstated The Worm during the SpaceX Demo-2 mission, it's now being used for select missions and other notable applications.
