There is a woodworking shop where, using machines over a 100 years old, craftspeople cut these historic wooden bowls from massive blocks of hardwoods. Gnarled hands load the blocks onto the spinning lathes and guide the specially shaped knives so that bowl after bowl in ever increasing sizes is wrested from the heart of the tree. For many years we have been proud to retail wooden bowls such as these in our stores and now we are offering them on our website. Because they come straight from the tree they have all the individuality that many seek out. The darker wood you see in a bowl is the old heartwood and the lighter is the sapwood which is to the outside of the tree. If you are looking for a plastic uniformity, don't bother with these bowls. These one piece wooden bowls are nature in true display. After the bowls are cut to shape they are very carefully dried, then sanded smooth and finished with a bees oil. These wooden bowls are not truly round but become somewhat elliptical as they dry. Four sizes are available; 15", 12", 10", and 8" diameter. Three one piece wood salad bowl species are offered; Black Walnut, Maple, and Cherry.
