History of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald: A Fateful Great Lakes Freighter
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, an impressive 729-foot-long Great Lakes freighter, was named after the president of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. Operating from 1958 to 1975, this formidable vessel was primarily tasked with transporting taconite iron ore. However, tragedy struck on November 10, 1975, when the ship succumbed to a severe storm and sank in Lake Superior, tragically claiming the lives of all 29 crew members onboard. This devastating event remains etched in American history as one of the most well-known maritime disasters.
Four days after the sinking, on November 14th, 1975, a Navy aircraft discovered the wreckage lying at a depth of 530 feet in Lake Superior.
