Oud is a costly material, the unique odour created by a fungus Philophora parasitica, that only affects around one in fifteen trees in the Aquilaria genus. This triggers a response in the trees, transforming the heart of the wood into a fatty, dark, aromatic wood. This is chipped, steam distilled and treasured.  The smell of real oud is unforgettable, a pungent balsamic thunderous surround that can have facets of dark treacle, church smoke, aged rum, barrel aged sherry, vanilla pods and resinous pipe smoke.
