Dale Hawerchuk made an immediate and historic impact in his rookie season with the Winnipeg Jets. Drafted first overall in June of 1981, the rookie center lived up to the hype by scoring 45 goals and adding 58 assists for a total of 103 points in 80 games, setting an NHL record for most points by an 18-year-old. His performance not only earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's Rookie of the Year but also helped lead the Jets to a dramatic 48-point improvement over the previous season. Hawerchuk's dynamic play and leadership quickly established him as the franchise cornerstone and one of the league's brightest young stars.
