Sugarcane is in the same family as grass, and grows in the form of tall, narrow stalks, or canes. Sugarcane is planted in ruts on its side in the fall. It requires no maintenance over the winter, and in spring you'll be greeted with sugar cane sprouts that will grow as tall as bamboo. Sugarcane grows in the tropics, and it can be grown in the warmer parts of the United States. Currently, sugarcane is grown commercially in Florida, Louisiana, Hawaii, and Texas. If you live in one of these states, you can grow your own sugarcane. Harvested sugarcane can be made into delicious syrup. Here is the types I have:
Striped-Stemmed Sugarcane: It is a glossy colorful stems with yellow and dark red lines. It is known to be smallest of the four types. To me, this is the sweetest and softest of the four types.
Wine Red Sugarcane: It is by far the easiest to grow. It seems to grow the larges sugarcane. Still very sweet, but not always the softest. Usually, this gives you the most shoots in the shortest amount of time.
Red Sugarcane: This sugarcane is medium in size & very sweet.
Green Sugarcane: This is the in between type. Not always as sweet as the striped cane but usually sweeter than the red cane. Usually, softer the red but not always more soft than the striped cane.
Black Sugarcane: This one is very similar to the green cane. It is very sweet, soft, and productive.
You can try them all as they become available. Remember, the sugarcane shoots is where you are going to get most of your sugarcane from.
