The Droopy Mid Century Long Door Handle is a super practical and useful addition to something we use every day, doors. The shape is inspired by various furniture pieces and legs that were made from the 1920’s onward into the 1960’s. It has a nice shape that feels good in the hand and proportionally appeals to both the eye and human touch.
We originally designed this to complement our various interior door designs so that this handle could be used in place of a typical door knob. Thus it is recommended that it be used with non-locking doors, such as wardrobe or utility closets, with locking doors that only use a keyed deadbolt, or with large furniture pieces for which it seems appropriate. When using with doors we recommend pairing these handles with a roller latch.
It comes in a small curated spectrum of colors that will complement a variety of personal home decors. I recommend you choose a finish with sheen if you are worried about scratches ever being a problem, they tend to be less noticeable than on a matte finish. Droopy Moss, Chocolate, and Black are available in both a matte and sheen finish, while Light Brown and Tudor Brown are both a semi-sheen finish.
The handle is made of quality birch plywood and you do see the plywood edges, I leave them visible. I happen to prefer the look of plywood personally. It is meant to be used with (1) a solid material door, such as solid lumber or quality plywood, and (2) on an interior door or interior furniture piece. Again, it is meant for interior use only on solid materials.
For peace of mind if you change your mind and want to move your handle from one door to another, you can do that. Installation leaves a few very small holes that can be patched and filled. If you want to mount a handle to each side of a door, you can do that. If you lose the hardware, give it away, buy a used one, etc. and you need replacement parts, we offer those too.
----- Disclaimers -----
Material and Color:
Wood colors, shades, tone, and especially wood grains are not always matchy matchy. I can’t guarantee that one grain will be the same as the next or that one product that “is the same color” as another will literally look exactly the same. That’s just not how wood works. Lighting conditions can also affect the appearance of an item drastically.
I am using birch veneer plywood with a veneer core. There may be small voids in the edges because of how plywood is manufactured. I do use quality plywood but even high grade plywood doesn't always have zero voids these days. That being said, I will not send you anything that looks bad. You will get something that looks nice and functions as it should.
Important note:
These door handles MUST be installed on solid doors, whether they are solid lumber or quality plywood. Many newer doors are not solid; they have air gaps, are made of cheap composites, and sometimes even made with a foam or cardboard core. These door handles will NOT mount reliably on non-solid doors. If you don’t know if your particular door is solid try doing some research first. Solid doors are noticeably heavier, even narrow ones.
Installation hardware:
Replacement hardware and replacement installation templates are available for purchase. The hardware and screws used for installation are small enough that a young child can swallow them. Do not let a young child play with any of the hardware and potentially ingest it.
Installation:
It is straight forward to install these handles and they come with the necessary hardware and an installation template. A screw driver or a drill will be needed for installation, one is not provided. The installation template can be temporarily taped onto a door to perfectly align and space the connectors, tape is not provided. You will also need a level (or good eye balls) to make sure the template is nice and straight.
DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN SCREWS. Tighten them firmly, test the fit, and if you would like the fit to be even tighter remove the handle and tighten the screws a bit more. Repeat until the handle is attached as firmly as you prefer. It is better to tighten the screws gradually than to over tighten and have to pull back the tension.
