The Lollipop Prawn (Macrobrachium gracilirostre) is an incredibly unique, large freshwater prawn named for its elongated claws with vivid striped patterns that resemble candy or lollipops. This rare, wild-collected species is a showstopper for species-specific tanks and experienced keepers looking for something striking, interactive, and truly unusual. Though peaceful toward fish too large to be considered prey, this prawn can show aggression toward other shrimp or smaller inverts and is best kept in a tank of its own or with select tankmates. What We Love About This Species: • Incredible Appearance: Long, banded claws give this prawn its “lollipop” name• Rare and Wild-Collected: Uncommon in the hobby, and highly sought-after• Personality-Packed: Curious and expressive, often visible and interactive• Large and Impressive: Reaches a substantial size with a commanding presence Natural Habitat: Native to rivers, streams, and estuaries across Southeast Asia, Lollipop Prawns are typically found in mildly brackish to freshwater areas with sandy or muddy bottoms, submerged roots, and plenty of cover. Aquascaping: • Plants: Tough plants like Java Fern, Anubias, or floating plants recommended—avoid delicate species• Hardscape: Driftwood, caves, and hiding spots are essential, especially during molting• Substrate: Sand or fine gravel to mimic riverbeds and allow easy movement Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous and opportunistic—will accept sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen foods (like bloodworms and brine shrimp), and fresh veggies like blanched zucchini or spinach. Provide a protein-rich diet to support growth and coloration. Tank Mates and Compatibility: Use caution. While generally not aggressive toward larger fish, they may catch and eat small fish or shrimp. Best kept alone, in a pair, or with robust fish that can’t be easily caught (like larger danios or rainbowfish). Breeding: Lollipop Prawns require brackish conditions for larval development, making them difficult to breed in captivity. All individuals offered are wild-collected. Recommended Tank Parameters: • Temperature: 72° - 80° F (22° - 27° C)• pH: 7.5 - 8.0• KH: 4 - 12• Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons for a single adult Care Guidelines: • Diet: Omnivorous—needs variety and protein• Social Behavior: Semi-aggressive; best kept alone or with compatible tank mates• Origin: Wild-collected• Average Adult Size: 3 – 4.5 inches (7.6 – 11.4 cm), excluding claws• Average Purchase Size: 2 – 3 inches (5 – 7.6 cm) Add a striking conversation piece to your freshwater collection with the Lollipop Prawn (Macrobrachium gracilirostre)—a bold, brilliant species unlike any other in the hobby.
